A franchise SEO brief should prevent bad pages before it helps anybody write good ones.
If the team has not confirmed the page's job, serviceability, local facts, proof, owner and conversion route, the correct status is DO NOT DRAFT. Scaling uncertainty is how a network ends up with hundreds of location pages that look impressive in a sitemap and useless in the market.
Below is the actual brief. Copy it, adapt the fields to your franchise system and refuse production when a required field is unresolved.
If your network does not yet have a controlled location and service architecture, fix that through the local SEO system before asking a content team to scale it.
What this brief controls
Use one completed brief per canonical page. The master template can repeat; the evidence inside it cannot.
It is suitable for:
- location pages;
- regional or location hubs;
- service pages;
- selective service-by-location pages;
- franchisee profile pages;
- decision guides and supporting resources.
It is not permission to create a URL for every service, suburb and keyword combination. URL eligibility belongs in your franchise topical-authority and programmatic SEO strategy.
Gate 0: permission to draft
Complete this gate first.
| Required condition | Answer | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| A real customer or navigation need exists | Yes / No | Query, site-navigation or customer evidence |
| The location genuinely provides or supports the service | Yes / No | Approved service/location record |
| One canonical page owns the primary job | Yes / No | Query-to-page map |
| The page has facts or decision value not available on its parent | Yes / No | Local/evidence fields below |
| The enquiry route reaches the correct location or team | Yes / No | Tested destination |
| A named person owns factual approval | Yes / No | Owner |
If any answer is No or unknown, set:
production_status: DO NOT DRAFT
Do not ask the writer to “make it unique”. Missing evidence is not a copywriting challenge.

Use only fields that are public, accurate and relevant. Google Business Profile guidance requires real-world accuracy and generally one profile per eligible location. For multi-location action links, Google says the destination should be specific to that location.
An opening-hours field is not a writing prompt. It is an operating fact that needs an owner and verification date.

Extract structure and expectations, not competitor expression. Record when the result set is not geo-pinned. If the search prefers a location directory or category page, do not force an article because the content team knows how to produce articles.
6. Page-specific information gain
Require at least one usable source:

“Make the page more local” is not information gain. A verified service difference, access note, local team, area-specific booking rule, decision table or genuinely local question can be.
7. Section contract
Use the minimum modules needed for this page.
| Section | Job | Required inputs | Completion test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening | Answer the local or service decision | Page job, offer, location | Useful when read alone |
| Fit | Explain who this location/service suits | Serviceability, customer conditions | No hidden eligibility |
| Service detail | Define what is available | Approved scope | No invented inclusions |
| Local evidence | Prove this is the correct location | Verified local record | Cannot be pasted onto another location |
| Decision help | Resolve a material objection | Customer questions, operating facts | Helps action, not just word count |
| Proof | Support trust without inflation | Approved proof | Source and limitation are clear |
| Next step | Route the enquiry correctly | Tested location destination | Works on mobile and desktop |
| FAQ | Answer unresolved real questions | Search/customer evidence | No duplicate filler |

Structured data describes the visible page. It does not make an unsupported page legitimate and does not create AI recommendation visibility.
9. Internal-link contract
Every page needs a reason for each link.

primary_service_link:
location_or_region_link:
supporting_resource_links:
nearby_location_links:
conversion_link:
required_inlinks:
anchor_guidance:
Do not link every location to every neighbouring location. Use the hierarchy and the customer's next useful decision.
10. Proof and source ledger
| Claim or fact | Source | Owner | Checked | Public-use permission | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Source priority:
- approved franchise operating record;
- approved location record;
- current official platform, government or regulator source;
- permitted first-party evidence;
- reputable independent corroboration;
- clearly labeled Searchmaxxed or brand opinion.
Do not turn an estimate into a fact or a planned capability into an existing service.
11. Approval contract
brand_fact_approver:
local_fact_approver:
claims_approver:
seo_owner:
editor:
developer_or_cms_owner:
final_release_approver:
approval_due:
unresolved_exceptions:
Approval is not “everyone had access to the document”. Record the person, decision and version.
12. Pre-publication QA
- Page job and canonical owner still match the live search evidence.
- Every public local fact has an owner and verification date.
- Service availability matches the location record.
- The page contains information that cannot be reproduced by changing the place name.
- No claim exceeds its source.
- One H1, title and meta description match the page job.
- Canonical, robots and sitemap state are deliberate.
- Structured data matches visible content.
- Internal links are crawlable and go to their intended destinations.
- The contact, call, booking or quote route reaches the correct location.
- Desktop and mobile render without broken tables, overflow or hidden copy.
- Similarity against neighbouring pages is reviewed by a person, not accepted from a score alone.
- The final source and rendered version are frozen before approval.
Brief variants
Location page
Emphasise location identity, services available, contact path, access, hours, local team and useful local decision information. Do not force a national service essay into the page.
Service-by-location page
Require evidence that the service exists at that location and the query deserves a separate destination. Explain the service conditions locally. Link to both the parent service and location.
Regional hub
Help people choose among real locations or service areas. The hub owns navigation and regional comparison; its child pages own individual location detail.
Supporting guide
Require one question, an extractable answer, original operator value, current sources and a deliberate link to the correct service or location page.
What this template will not solve
A brief cannot repair:
- an ungoverned location database;
- disputed service territories;
- missing proof;
- a CMS that cannot publish the required fields;
- five pages already fighting for the same query;
- a head office that cannot get timely location updates;
- an offer that changes from one page to the next.
Those belong in the broader franchise SEO content system. Fix the operating fault instead of adding another instruction to the writer.
FAQ
Can every franchise location use the same template?
Yes, if the template defines structure and quality. No, if “same template” means the same finished copy. Every completed brief needs verified page-specific facts, proof, ownership and links.
How much unique copy does each location page need?
There is no defensible percentage. Judge whether the page has a distinct job and useful local decision value. A low similarity score cannot make invented or irrelevant local detail useful.
Should franchisees write their own pages?
They can supply local facts, questions, photos and operating knowledge. Central editorial control should protect taxonomy, claims, architecture and quality unless the franchise system has a different governed model.
Does a brief make programmatic SEO safe?
No. It helps enforce the inputs and gates. The page still needs legitimate demand, real serviceability, distinct value, maintained facts and a useful destination.
What happens when local information is missing?
Do not draft the affected module or page. Assign the missing fact to an owner. Holding a page is cheaper than publishing a polished falsehood across the network.
Make the brief a release gate
The best brief is not the longest document. It is the one that makes weak work impossible to approve.
