A lean marketing team should not maintain internal links one page at a time.

If your programmatic system creates 500 pages, it should also create the few relationships that keep those pages reachable, useful and connected to money. Otherwise every new URL creates another editorial chore, and the graph decays the moment your team gets busy.

The rules are intentionally boring. Boring rules survive.

Choose the parent before you generate the child

A page family needs one commercial or categorical owner.

  • provider profiles belong to a marketplace category;

The rule should return zero links when nothing is genuinely relevant. Filling empty space is not the objective.

  • No link targets an empty, held, redirected or expired destination.

Maintenance

  • The link rules run from data, not a spreadsheet of manual edits.
  • A data owner knows what happens when a page becomes ineligible.
  • A crawl reports new orphans and broken destinations after each release.

What to automate

Automate the parts that can be stated as rules:

  • parent assignment;
  • child eligibility;
  • sibling selection and cap;
  • destination health;
  • sitemap inclusion;
  • orphan detection;
  • redirects when an entity is replaced.

Keep judgement where it belongs:

  • whether the page answers a distinct customer question;
  • whether an adjacent destination is truly useful;
  • whether two page families are competing for the same job;

Automation should remove repetitive maintenance, not remove accountability.
